A little poignancy with Ruby
Since yesterday I have been reading Why's (Poignant) Guide to Ruby. Its been some time since I learned a new language. So I decided to pick up Ruby for the heck of it. Ruby on Rails is also 1 of the 2 supposedly hot web technologies to debut in recent times, the other being AJAX, so I wanted to see what the buzz was all about.
What do I say about this popular newbies book for Ruby. The author is obviously crazy, creative and quite brilliant. His writing style is totally whacky and unpredictable. I don't know whether to love it or loathe it. It doesn't feel like a technical book at all. Sometimes he gets the point across very succintly, sometimes he just blabs on and I am confused about what he is trying to say. The book is a very whacky crash course on the language that is Ruby.
It is a like a Govinda and David Dhawan movie that you are watching and suddenly you realize during the interval that you are actually _enjoying_ the movie. You are confused whether the movie is really good or whether you are going insane. I have read only a few chapters and somehow I know that the best/worst is yet to come. Then there are these cartoon foxes. Absolutely crazy hand drawn illustrations who keep on saying stupid and intelligent things alternately. Sometimes you look forward to their bakwaas and sometimes you want to strangle them. The only time I have been so confused is in 11th standard when I used to go to Lambodar Mishra's IIT coaching classes. He was a brilliant teacher but sometimes I simply could not understand what was going on and would simply keep on nodding my head trying to look intelligent.
All said and done I wish I could write like this why guy. Simply brilliant.
Ruby in itself seems like a nice language. It is somewhat more human friendly compared to other languages such as C/C++ but nothing very exceptional. It also has 1 of the most weird syntax I have seen in recent times. But something tells me that I am going to like coding in Ruby.
But I am yet to finish the book. So the detailed bricks and bouquets will come later.
P.S Well to be absolutely fair there are some Govinda movies I liked but I cannot remember their names right now. But definitely none of his movies from the recent 2-3 years.
