The Delhi Bloggers' Meet a.k.a The Mystery of the Missing Butter Chicken

Submitted by varun on Sun, 03/09/2006 - 4:15am.

Yawn. Saturday morning. Woke up late. 11:45. Did everything at fastforward. Reached Cafe 100 a bit late at 1:20 for the Delhi Bloggers' Meet.

Had a great time. No fixed agenda. Freewheeling discussions. Tatoos to Technorati. Interesting people. Interesting topics. Decent food. Good coffee. No butter chicken as promised.

The following Delhi bloggers attended the meet:

  • Aruni - Shy guy but only till he gets to know you. Taught me how to pronounce 'Xo' in Assamese. Pronounced as a forceful 'Ho' with the mouth wide open and warm air being blown out of the mouth.
  • Blow - Height of modesty. Sings very well but you have to really bug her to make her sing. Sang a few songs including a Punjabi one. Understood only some of the lyrics but enjoyed the songs nonetheless.
  • Dhiraj - The Tatoo guy. Totally at peace with his world. Conclusively ended speculation on how many tatoos he has when he arrived.
  • Prasoon - The only person I have met before. Sang the Amitabh Bachan song 'Jahan char yaar...' from sharabi. Never knew that song had so interesting lyrics. I am terrible when it comes to lyrics. Can never ever remember them.
  • River - Host. River not her real name. The seniormost blogger in the bunch. You can read her account of the meet here
  • Scout - Guest of honour. Really like her style of blogging. She has also blogged about this meet but I cannot find the permalink to the post, this little hack should start working in a few days, it does not right now.
  • Shivam - The celebrity blogger with truckloads of gossip. His blog personna seems much more seedha saada than he really is. Shivam has blogged about the event here
  • MasiJeevi - One of the coolest blog names I have come across. Meaning one who lives on ink. Why can I never cook up a name like that? You can read his account of the meet here. Indic fonts not installed on this Debian, so cannot read his blog. Got 57 out of 100 in Hindi in my 10th boards. Only time in my life I cried on seeing my exam results.
  • Tejaswi - One of the first bloggers on my blogroll. Back when I had a blogroll small enough to fit on my blog. New to Delhi. Was somewhat lost. Showed him the Metro. Was impressed. Me too happy to found somebody newer to Delhi than me.

Will keep updating above list as other posts about the meet appear.

Actual meet was followed by me and Tejaswi going to Oxford Book Store which was bit of disappointment and then finally going to Amrit Book Co (can you have a more boring name?) where I bought 4 books, all classics in their own ways. (Re)Resolved to read at least couple of books every month. Finally started towards my long-standing goal of having all the Asimov books in my collection by getting I, Robot.

All in all a very nice day. It's 4:15 AM right now and am still wide awake. Might start reading one of the books.

Oh btw after having lunch we were cribbing about how butter chicken was not available at Cafe 100 when. That's when waiter pointed out a dish on the menu called 'Murgh Makhani'. Call us desi firangs, aur kya?

The Delhi Bloggers' Meet a.k.a The Mystery of the Missing Butter

Submitted by ~River~ (not verified) on Sun, 03/09/2006 - 11:14am.

Yep, it was good fun! We should think seriously about having a bloggers' trip! I added an update on the butter chicken fiasco. And "seniormost"...aha! Sounds like I go around doddering, stooping and dribbling my spit! :D

Excellent idea

hey... that's a nice thought. We ought to plan a bloggers' trip... as long as nobody has withdrawal symptons for being kept away from the keyboard!

And I categorically state that you do not go around doddering, stopping or dribbling my spit :-) 'seniormost' is the best euphemisn I could cook up at 4:00 AM for 'oldest'.

Switch over to google, u r that good in profiling

Hey varun, U are really good at profiling people. Thumbs up on your account of the meet.

BTW you don need indic to read my blog. If u are using win XP jus change view> encoding to unicode (UTF 8) it will do.

For my post on meet visit here

Thanks buddy

Thanks buddy.

Actually at home I have only Linux so I will have to install Indic fonts. Unicode has the capability to support a large number of character sets but usual installations do not have all the possibilities due to size and probably performance issues. I will read your blog from office where I have Windows XP installed.

hellew

so yeah, loads of fun was had. :D and of course, the whole discussion of ur dad and the net was hilarious to say the least :D

good to know that you like my blog, but you could've said that even without meeting me :DDD

it was fun

Submitted by varun on Mon, 04/09/2006 - 8:05am.

Yeah, it was fun. And hey my Dad would probably be reading this (Hi Dad!) so I will clarify:

I was the only blogger there whose Dad knew about the blog, everybody's parents were generally oblivious to their children's blogs, in some case necessarily so due to the content! In fact my Dad was one of my earliest readers and has also been one of the most faithful ones...

I did not read your blog before I met you. It was only after the meet that I read some of your posts. And often I find it easier to relate to a blog if I have a face to go along with it.

Coooool

Submitted by varun on Mon, 04/09/2006 - 8:08am.

I was thinking that you would turn up halfway through the meet. I was going to call you around 3:00 but I forgot.

In fact we got together around 1:00 and were together till about 5:30 or so...

Murgh Makhani

Submitted by Pratik (not verified) on Sun, 03/09/2006 - 10:53pm.

Well .. AFAIK .. its Murgh Makhani originally .. so its you guys who are the firangs .. not the restaurant walas :P

abey gadhey

Submitted by varun on Mon, 04/09/2006 - 8:10am.

Abey gadhey, I was referring to us only, we were the desi firangs, not the restaurant walas. It was a true "Oh oh!" moment when we finally realized that butter chicken was indeed available on the menu.

Achhha??!!

Submitted by Shivam (not verified) on Sun, 03/09/2006 - 11:28pm.

I'm not seedha saadaha? WTF?

much less than your "blog persona"

Submitted by varun on Mon, 04/09/2006 - 8:30am.

Seedha saadha is a very relative concept, suffice it to say that you are definitely not as seedha saadha as you appear to be on your blog :-)

Where are the pictures Varun

Submitted by Amit Agarwal (not verified) on Mon, 04/09/2006 - 12:31am.

Where are the pictures Varun :)

no pics policy

Submitted by varun on Mon, 04/09/2006 - 8:35am.

We had decided on a "no pics" policy before the meet.

A bunch of noisy people, with beer and vodka and a messy table is not something that should find its way to the Net :-)

Also some of the bloggers blog under adopted nicks so it will not do any good for their pics to appear online.

Tattoo guy

Submitted by Dhiraj (not verified) on Mon, 04/09/2006 - 1:11am.

That was some fast and furious writing, mate!!
I like the name you've given me... will use it sometime as an aka. Was nice meeting you :)

was nice meeting you too

Submitted by varun on Mon, 04/09/2006 - 8:11am.

Was nice meeting you too Dhiraj and we ought to continue the discussion about the Net and it's shrinking effects sometime ;-)

maybe it was the beer

Submitted by varun on Mon, 04/09/2006 - 2:34pm.

Maybe it was the beer talking :-)

Nice idea

Submitted by shashi (not verified) on Sat, 09/09/2006 - 7:45pm.

What a nice idea...a bloggers meeting..
You are quite lucky...such events are really good. We usually have an image of blogger just reading his/her blog. But this is sometimes( no ..maximum times) different from his actual image. When we meet bloggers in person we usually shocked....

no pics?AND btw updates

Submitted by Paavani (not verified) on Thu, 14/09/2006 - 5:14pm.

no pics?
AND btw updates time!!!

lazy and busy and boring

Submitted by varun on Thu, 14/09/2006 - 7:45pm.

I am lazy.
I am busy.
Nothing interesting happening in my life.

That's a very bad combination for a blogger :-(

As far as pics are concerned just check out this comment of mine.
