Blogger's block

It is difficult to keep blogging when nothing interesting is happening in your life. Sometimes I want to write something in my blog but do not have a topic to blog about. Sometimes I have tons to blog about but cannot find the time. Right now it is the former.

Last week I met some friends from DBM. We met up at Dilli Haat, had fruit beers, a few momos and chatted for around 2 hours. Sanjukta, AmitKen, Amit, Diya and Abhishek were there and I enjoyed spending time with them... as usual there was no agenda or anything and we just keep floating between various topics. I had a great time with them and I look forward to meeting them more often.

On Saturday and Sunday I read the The Da Vinci Code for the 2nd time, did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed it last time though. I was looking forward to seeing the movie, especially because Tom Hanks is starring, but seems that the movie will be caught up in censorship wrangles for some time at least.

Pallavi a.k.a. Pallu has left for a long-term onsite deputation in the Gujju-dominated land of New Jersey. Another friend of mine is also set to fly to the US of A but I will refrain from blogging about it till all her plans formalized.

Dhaval, one of my school friend has also started blogging and his blog is titled "Med Man Says Kem Cho?". Go figure. He is busy with his medical exams right now so I guess he won't really start blogging for at least another month or so. Welcome Dhaval! Speaking of friends Shantanu a.k.a. Desi Maharaja is the only person I know of who blogs regularly. Great going Shantanu.

I have an interesting tag to pick up too but somehow I just don't feel like blogging about that right now. That's all for now. C ya!

Dude! You just wrote an entire post about why you haven't posted anything :)

Sad, isn't it?

Submitted by varun on Thu, 18/05/2006 - 12:13pm.

Yeah. Really sad, isn't it?

That's ok :)

Hey that's ok...It happens...sometimes you have to stop for a while, and then come back and write something...It happened to me when first I created my blog...

My first post was a thank you note for a friend, and then I just didn't know what to write! So take it easy :)

While going through some of your previous posts, I found many anons commenting. Just for the sake of curiosity I ask : Do you (i.e. a blogger) have any means to differentiate among anons or they are simply anons? (I think email IDs may serve the purpose as far as they are not same, isn't it?)

can distinguish but not reliably

Submitted by varun on Thu, 18/05/2006 - 2:02pm.

I can differentiate between anons by noting the IP address from where they posted the comment, by the email address they used and also by their style of English. However needless to say all 3 of these techniques are unreliable and a determined anonymous commenter can easily conver his/her tracks very easily.

Why do you ask? And I found it a bit funny that you yourself are an anon commenter :-)

Email and IP are reasonably

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 18/05/2006 - 5:02pm.

Email and IP are reasonably valid means but "Style of English"? I do not agree on that because two distinct buddies may adopt same/similar style of english in writing/commenting or on the other hand, a single person may not be consistent in his/her style of english for the same. Tell me what pattern you noticed in my style of English.

Reading another anon made me curious to ask you the question. No other reason :)

And btw, after this much of regular(!) conversation (on blog, ofcourse), I am no more anonymous now by my end. :)

difficult to articulate

Submitted by varun on Thu, 18/05/2006 - 7:39pm.

Take the example of a person's voice. 2 different people can have similar voices (for e.g. me and my Dad) and the same person can speak in different voices depending on his mood, topic etc. However we still very commonly use the voice of person to identify him/her... most common example being on the phone. We are not always right but we do have a reasonable amount of confidence.

Same thing with style of writing. I am no language expert and I cannot pinpoint what I observe... however I do, at some level, mentally record the characteristics of a person's English... the person's vocab, usage of grammar, slang words etc. Again I cannot filter these out into tangible characteristics but at some level I do recognise a person from what s/he has written.

This technique is nowhere even near foolproof but sometimes it is useful...

OK, lets take it for granted

OK, lets take it for granted what you explain. Then also you are still to tell what you have observed in my style of English.

(PS: Varun, you pick up this comment only if you have time to spare otherwise no need. I will enjoy If you really write about.)

Sorry boss

Submitted by varun on Fri, 19/05/2006 - 3:40pm.

Sorry boss :-) I am not falling for that trap. If you want me to analyse your English you will have to tell me who you are, confirm that by email and only then will I go ahead. For all I know you could be my boss!

err....it's let's and not

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 19/05/2006 - 1:57pm.

err....it's let's (let us) and not lets....

See!

Submitted by varun on Fri, 19/05/2006 - 3:42pm.

See! I told you. Al of us make some speling mistaks all the time and that is one characteristic in your style of English.

Same Condition..

Hi Varun,

Same 'Blogger Block' to me!!

Long time no see.

Submitted by varun on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 5:15pm.

Long time no see? Nice to have you back.

What the!!

Submitted by JhQ (not verified) on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 8:32am.

Hey,
I blog regularly, my regular is a just a bit more spread out than urs :P.
Neways, whats all this anonymous business, If a person can't be bothered leaving their name behind, I can't be bothered tracinf them out. In all sense, I see no reason why anyone would leave a anonymous comment.

To JhQ

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 10:34am.

Well, I don't know you and also I am not getting your words exactly. But what I guess you try to say Anons should not be cared to let them go such a long way. But friend, I did continue only when I got the proper reply from the blogger and I am sure you won't find any of my comments forcing the blogger to reply. And I have not opted this to be a TP bussiness. It all depends on the blogger what to do with anons. ok?

no offence yaar

Submitted by varun on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 11:45am.

Hi Anon,

Well JhQ is an old school friend with a penchant for dissection of any topic and an even bigger penchant for arguing with me :-)

I think what he is trying to say is if a person want to remain anonymous I should just let him/her be (I agree btw). I do not think he was specifically talking about you... probably he did not realize that you were just fooling around.

You can be as anonymous or an obvious as you want... no problem with me (or with JhQ I am sure). Just that I can always put your comments in a better context if I have a name associated with it.

So what say you? Are you going to tell us who you are?

Chudasma Sir and Adesh

Submitted by varun on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 11:39am.

Your comment about your blog being a little more 'spread out' reminded me of something that Chudasma Sir said to Adesh when we were all attending 10th Std. crash course. Chudasma Sir said to he class (about Adesh) "He is not irregular... he is regularly irregular".

Regarding anon comments, I think, in this case the commenter left out his name not because s/he is lazy or want to remain anonymous but just to play around a bit... I usually do not receive anonymous comments.

Bye!

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 12:23pm.

Thanks for your words and you are right in my case. I wanted to reveal my identity a bit later and am still willing the same. If "anonymous comments" are going to degrade the quality/fame of your blog, I insist ( and not simply suggest), you clear out all those one from me. And I assure you won't get the similar one now onwards atleast from me. So, good bye from this anon!

whoa!

Submitted by varun on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 1:00pm.

Hey man! (or woman in case people accuse me of being sexist),

As I said don't worry too much when commenting. Go ahead and just write what you want to... Your comments do not degrade the quality (quality? what quality?) or the (fictitious) fame (how I wish you were true!) of this blog!

This blog does receive its share of crap comments but all of that is spam and I promptly delete them. But hardly ever have I deleted a comment, good or bad, by a real user. You will find enough comments lying around that criticize me, my posts and what not. However I have never deleted them and do not intend to do so.

once more!

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 12:37pm.

Oh Shit! Why didn't I "refresh" the Browser (ur web page) before posting the prev comment?.

Varun, I am extreamly sorry for the hard words to your friend JhQ. But I am determined. :)

Hi JhQ - A big sorry from me! again :)

now I am confused...

Submitted by varun on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 1:02pm.

Now I am really confused. Are you saying that you will stick around or are you saying bye?

It would be nice of you to hang around and maybe next time we can have a full-blown flamewar! :-)

And btw there is something wrong with how browsers cache pages from this blog. Even I am having problems with cache...

Session ends here.........

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 6:19pm.

Na baba na, I am not at all interested in violent FlameWar(s). I am by nature cool and calm (atleast other ppl say, btw my parents usually have very opposite experience of me! :)).

And I am saying "Bye" not because I mistakenly felt hurt but because I will be busy ,for the next few days, working on a new project assignment that requires much concentration.

So,you will have no more "Mathakut!" with me !!.

At losing end?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 6:57pm.

Don't worry. u r not gonna lose a reader. I'll surely read ur updates but not comment anymore!!!!!!

Sahi. It happens.
BTW you guys have own DBM meets too. Good.

just a casual get-together

Not a DBM meet. Just a casual gathering of friends.

Apologies

Submitted by JhQ (not verified) on Sat, 20/05/2006 - 11:08pm.

Apologies to Mr/Mrs/Ms Anonymous, that comment was not directed towards you, nor do I wish someone to stop commenting on Varun's blog on my behalf. Just as the site disclaimer says, that was my personal opinion .

Sankalp was a good time, now that you've brought it up, I remember another incident. This was during the 10th grade Summer batch when we used to sit on the last benches. I remember Chudasama sir asking everyone if they had completed the homework. As usual he started from the last bench and asked Aadesh if he had done it. Aadi had not but he just bluffed he had, hoping that Sir would not ask to check it. Next in line was me and I bluffed as well. But unfortunatly, next was Ruchir and he admitted he hadn't. Everyone after him (60 of em) went on to say that they had not. This left me and Aadi they only people in the class to have done the homework. While the rest of the class got a good scholding, me and Aadi were keeping our fingers crossed. Good times man....

You escaped?!?

Submitted by varun on Mon, 22/05/2006 - 9:55am.

You mean to say Chudasma Sir believed you and did not check up on your homework?!? Either he must have been too pissed off at the class to check your homework or you 2 guys must have done one hell of an acting.
