Sizzling hot

Life is going on as usual. Nothing new to report. Week was somewhat hectic but not as hectic as the weeks preceding it. Most of my time was spent in reading and tweaking new proposals and also reading up some RFTs (Request for Tender). Nice and long weekend coming up (holiday on Monday!) so am just going to chill out, read a book and maybe come to office to catch up on some reading.

Delhi is getting hotter and hotter by the day. Our home is on the top floor and by the time we reach home in the evening it is damn hot. Everything is hot. My bed is hot, the water is hot, the walls are hot, the air is hot, everything is hot.

Yesterday I had a hard time sleeping due to the heat. I woke up at around 1 and went into another room to sleep hoping that it would be a little cooler there. Did not make much of a difference. I woke up at 3 having nightmares about proposals (really!) and I had a hard time getting back to sleep. I know what you must be thinking... that this guy is working too hard... naah it was probably due to the heat. We do have an ancient cooler but it is not working... getting it repaired is very high on my TODO list.

Am going to stay over with some friends of mine tonight. We will probably eat out, watch TV late into the night, talk, sing and relax in general. On Sunday one of my friends from ILP, Nidhi, is getting married and I will be going to her wedding in the evening.

And oh yes! Pratik and Sahil... Happy Birthday guys!

That's all for now. See you on Tuesday (hopefully).

Heat

Ahh the heat of Delhi... haven't really experienced it but have heard a lot about it.. What are the hottest months in India?? Over here, its still pretty cold.. still wearing sweatshirts.. It wil probably be the hottest in the US in June / July. just wondering..

May and June

I think the hottest months in Ahmedabad and Delhi would be May and June. Mid-April onwards the mercury starts rising and is it damn hot in May and June. Only July onwards does it start coming down slowly.

Believe it or not but this heat is one of the major motivating factors for me coming to office even on weekends. My house is damn hot during the daytime whereas office is air-conditioned :-)

LA is warmer

Destinylaw, your area is a bit cooler that downtown LA. Here it is getting warmer and warmer, at night time it's a bit cool but that's about it. Can't wait for summer - I most definitely prefer the heat than the cold!

Ghost comments??

The entry on ur home page shows 2 comment count, but coming to this page (full blog) shows 0 comments. Is it an error or a sort of hidden-private comments?

Btw, yours is a nice blog. keep it up.

No hidden/private comments

All comments on this blog are public. So I don't know why you saw 0 comments when you actually viewed this page. Maybe the cache is acting up again...

Anyways nice to have you here. And am interested in knowing who you are. Do I know you?

magic

Arre what magic is going on?

When I submit my prior comment, it showed me the first two (ghost??!!) comments.

Is it the matter that for reading a comment u need to post ur own comment?? :). Or my eyes need consulting an eye specialist. But beleive me, it really happened.

maybe its a race condition

Submitted by varun on Sat, 29/04/2006 - 7:14pm.

Maybe it is a Race Condition in the code that takes care of these things.

And I sure hope that it is a problem with my blog software only and not with your eyes :-)

Your blog is haunted

Varun, I have noticed the comments playing up before as well, however, I strongly suspect its a cache thing. Is your cache enabled?

Bhooooooooooooooot!

Submitted by varun on Tue, 02/05/2006 - 2:56pm.

Wah! Where did you appear from? I was beginning to suspect somebody had kidnapped you. Nice to have you back.

I do have cache enabled. It could be cache playing up but that usually does not affect comments in the way it is described here. I am positive that it is more of a race condition thing. Did you experience the same thing when you were posting a comment?

Mystery!!!!

Hi Varun,

Hope u r fine. I think now the id fits the context : Anon ppl!!! :)

Race Condition - a good OS concept. But As per the learning, it occurs when two processes try to access (especially try to write) a shared resource concurrently ( m I wrong?) , but how does it apply to this issue: there is no new comment being written at the time when one wants to access the page only for reading? .

Anyways, may I (or can I???!!!)know what makes u interested in knowing who I am?(:))

"Do u know me?" - let u make a guess!!.

one more thing I want to know Why the commentator requires to preview instead of directly post the comment? (I don't expect obvious answer like he/she can correct... etc..)

Hmmmm...

Submitted by varun on Wed, 03/05/2006 - 5:33pm.

You know what they call anonymous commenters on SlashDot, right? :-)

Well... the way you have described a race condition is correct but that is just 1 specific instance of a race condition. A more complete/broad definition does not limit itself to processes, writing etc. Let me quote Wikipedia here:

A race hazard (or race condition) is a flaw in a system or process where the output exhibits unexpected critical dependence on the relative timing of events. The term originates with the idea of two signals racing each other to influence the output first.

They key phrase here is "relative timing of events". When you are trying to post a comment maybe somebody else is posting one too, or maybe I am deleting some comment... it is just pure speculation. I haven't visited Drupal forums for a long time so cannot really say how concrete my speculation is.

Anyways, may I (or can I???!!!)know what makes u interested in knowing who I am?(:))

Am just interested in knowing who visits my blog and is making these comments. No other interest ;-)

You are probably in Ahmedabad and only my friends and relatives usually visit this blog so I guess you are one of them... so I am positive that you know me but not 100% sure.

Mandatory previewing before posting comments is just a (weak) anti-spam measure. Most CMS-agnostic comment-spam bots will leave the form after they have previewed it so it is a somewhat effective spam deterrent. However many bots are Drupal-aware and therefore this blog does receive its own share of comment spam.

Am I - a SlashDot's "Anonymous Coward" ???

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 04/05/2006 - 2:06pm.

No matters who tells what to whome bcuz I know what I am!!! ( 3 cheers for me !! :))

No ill intension b/h asking 'strange' question(s). Hope u get it.

They key phrase here is "relative timing of events". - makes an absolute sense abt Race Condition.

I am new to Blog (heard of it before, but this is the first time, I read/commented on a blog) so I could get very little from ur 2-3 line explanation abt "Mandatory preview, spam - anti spam ...." Will get it more from Internet on my own.

Btw I think, no, I am sure it is commentator and not commenter!! (quick check: MS WORD -> spell n gramm feature)

No problem at all

Submitted by varun on Fri, 05/05/2006 - 10:34am.

Hi Anon,

I ws just kidding about the Anonymous Coward thing. You are what you are and nothing I say is going to change that.

And I have absolutely no problem in you asking me strange questions... in fact I did not find any of the questions strange at all.

The Wikipedia article about Spam in blogs will help you understand what I was talkign about in my previous comment.

And 'commenter' is also an acceptable word for a person who posts a comment. Check out the definition and spelling TheFreeDictionary. Commentator is probably technically correct but somehow commenter so much more appropriate.

Thanks!
