Blah blah and more blah

I have been having a very interesting week till now. Interesting. Hectic. Confusing. Challenging.

We (my boss, a colleague and me) interacted with a group of Dutch students who had come to India on a study tour. Most of them were computer science students and a couple of them were Mathematics students. They were accompanied by two of their senior professors. My boss gave a presentation on Security, more specifically on some of the areas we are focussing on right now. Initially I found it a bit difficult to understand their accent but after a few minutes it was OK. We had a lavish dry lunch.

I moved out of the company guesthouse on Wednesday and moved in with 3 company-mates living in a 2BHK flat. Shifting was not so difficult... settling in at the new house was. 2BHK is actually a bit misleading. It is actually a 1BHK with the bedroom split into two smaller bedrooms. Thr good news is that the house is furnished, so we have a TV, cots, chairs, tables, fridge etc. We do not have a washing machine though. Since I shifted on a weekday and all of us (my new roommates) are quite busy nothing else happened during the week. I came to office on Saturday because I had to catch up on my reading. Sunday started off on a very interesting note... we fired our bai (maid servant). It is very difficult to hire a good bai here. They charge exhorbitant fees, are very moody and talk too much. This particular bai, whom I have not talked to much, was perpetually on vacation. She used to come on an average 2 days in a week, refused to mop the floor and was addicted to gossiping. So we fired her.

On Sunday my new roommates: Tony, Tejas and Abhishek and I cleaned up our house. Even they had moved into this house only last month or so and there was dust everywhere. Dust on the furniture, dust on the floor, dust on the doors... basically everywhere except the bathroom probably. We had brunch and then we got down to business. We threw out all the junk that was accumulating in nooks and corners, wiped all the furniture, fans and appliances, shifted the furniture to utilize the limited space in a better manner. Rock music (Tony and Tejas are big rock music fans... in fact Tejas plays the guitar quite well) was being played in the background and I am sure that helped us in ignoring the fatigue that was slowly coming over us. But finally we did it. The house was much cleaner, you could move around barefeet and one could move around freely without worrying that the clothes would get soiled.

And then there was better news. Our neighbour aunty helped us hire a new bai. This bai charges more and has a more eccentric schedule of cleaning and washing clothes... we tried to understand her timetable for a whole of 10 mins but finally we gave up. We just gave her blanket instructions to do the job and not bother us. Just imagine, 3 graduates and 1 post-grad with 7-8 years of experience between them not being able to comprehend a bai. Sigh.

We celebrated by dining out at the Pizza Hut in Green Park area. The service was terrible but the pizzas were good.

All in all a good day.

Life at work has also been good lately. Lots of stuff to learn (I seem to be repeating this around 20 times a day nowadays), lots of assignments to work on... but all of them quite interesting so no complaints... well not many in any case. I was doing some blog introspection and I realized how off-track my blog has become. Originally it was meant to mirror my thoughts and opinions. I also planned to exhibit my technical brilliance (hah!) by penning excellent techie articles and attract hordes of geeks and become famous overnight. But that never happened. Instead this blog has become a daily diary kinda place. And looking at my busy schedule that is how it is going to be for at least a couple of months. And maybe a couple more. And possible a couple more. You get the idea.

I have to attend a seminar next Monday. I will probably give a talk at a college level event next to next Friday so have my hands full.

Well if you are thinking when I will end the post you just got lucky. I am ending it right here. Was feeling a bit sleepy and decided to scare away sleep by blogging. Ploy seems to have worked so back to work.

Liberating!

Now it does sound like you are definitely settling in. Negotiating with the bai!! LOL ... Tell you the truth, it has nothing to do with you having any sort of experience. It's the male gender. I don't think the male gender is designed to negotiate with a kaamvali bai :) ... what's your take on that!

Ok as a side, I'm still getting used to blog lingo. So need your input... what exactly is a Tracback URL and what do I do with it?

Maybe you are right about the whole Guys vs. Bais thing

Submitted by varun on Tue, 07/03/2006 - 4:14pm.

Maybe you are right. I never thought of it that way. And come to think of it. Most of my girl-friends (notice the very important hyphen) do not have problems dealing with bais. Definitely food for thought.

Check out the Wikipedia article on Trackback for a nice explanation.

Basically (say) if you refer to a post on my blog you can feed in the Trackback URL of that post to your blogging platform. Your blogging platform will tell my blog that it has been referred to and a link to your post will appear beneath my post. This allows readers of my blog to go to your blog and find out what you have been saying about my post... kind of a blog conversation.

Check out this post of mine... you can see 2 trackbacks beneath the post and above the comments. You can follow the trackbacks to the original articles.

Of course trackbacks like comments can be moderated to deal with trackback spam. So if you send a trackback it might not appear immediately on the target blog.

Moreover sometimes your blogging platform will be able to autodetect the trackback URL of the target blog, sometimes you have to enter it manually.

Does this answer your question?

cool

Makes a bit more sense now. Now I can see why whenever I post there is a text box that says "Send trackbacks to". I get it now, thanks for the explanation. Good way to track a particular topic - not to mention to increase traffic :)

unable to comment on Wordpress.com

Btw I am unable to comment on any wordpress.com blog. I can read the blog just fine but cannot submit a comment.

Can somebody check whether they are facing a similar problem or is it just me?

??

Interesting! How come you were able to comment earlier? I have been able to comment fine on other wordpress blogs. I looked at their support page, and don't see anything that would cause it.

oh well... keep trying i guess.

Firefox problem

I think this issue is limited to Firefox. I am able to comment fine with IE. I once encountered this problem a long time back and had resolved but I do not recall how.

Did I hear something about...

...pizza? Favourite meal of mine. :-) The Pizza Hut double-cheese pizza is the best, in my opinion, but then US Pizza has the 'Unlimited' offer, so that's the preferred destination.

Pizza used to be my fav food but now it is not

Pizza used to be my favourite food but since a year or so I have been having too much pizza... now I am quite bored with pizza... though I do not dislike it I do not look forward to it as much as I used to.

My dream food nowadays is simple homemade food. Its at times like these that I regret not knowing how to cook.

ooooooo.... Pizzzaaaa

Why Regret?

Why Regret not knowin how to cook..

On a Sunday, all u gotta do is get up from ur bed, pick up some recipie book (or consult ur nani).. get the ingredients that not hard to procure, and put little bit of efforts that will be enuff to cook a simple yet tasty meal !

But guys being guys...feel that why do they need to take pains at all !!

wot say varun? When r u gonna become a chef ?

Excuse me?

"guys being guys..." what is that supposed to mean?! Not all guys are ignorant about cooking. I've been in the US now for almost 7 years, and I've cooked my own meals for close to 6.

What you said is right though. All you really need to do Varun is just start! Pick a dish. Get the recipe (online is the best source nowadays - tarladalal.com is my favorite). Get the ingredients, and just do something! Trust me, no matter how is turns out you'll be proud of yourself for putting in the effort. And the motivation to cook a better meal next time will get you to cook more often - how do i know? Been there done that! :)
