Another quick update

Another quick update. Have been having too many short and quick updates recently but have got lot of work to do so am short of time. Am still to acquire a local mobile number.

What do I write? My stay has been reasonably pleasant till now but not overly so. Have been having lots of small small problems everyday but nothing serious. Am still living at the company guest house and commuting from Noida to office takes a lot of time everyday. Luckily a friend Rajiv has been giving me a lift every single day till now but otherwise it is difficult to come to office from guest house. Will hopefully move into my own accommodation this weekend.

There is lot of work to be done. And challenging part is that almost all of it is new to me. It has been a while since I did any serious coding and I am slowly edging back into the programmer's mindset. Have been mucking around with Java a lot. Java is a language I sometimes hate and sometimes love. Right now my feelings are somewhere in between. There is a submission tomorrow and am working my ass off.

One major problem at my new office is that I don't have access to decent coffee. Both the vending machines dispense a terrible tasting concoction called coffee but I can vouch that it is anything but coffee. And even the lemon tea is only barely tolerable. Lunch is slightly better the fare they used to dish out in my Pune office but only barely so. I am sure in a few days I will get bored and will be looking for alternatives.

Chalo have to get back to reading. Tons of docs to go through. Will blog when I come up for air.

New places are fun

Hey Varun,

Hopefully you've sorted out your accomodation stuff. It's funny that the lack of "decent coffee" at your work place is termed as "major problem" by you :) ... Obviously you have your priorities in order, hehe! You mentioned in the past about the ability to comment on my Yahoo!360 blog. I'm moving my blogspace to blogger.com as many people have told me that they want to comment without signing into yahoo. The new blog I'm setting up is at http://desimaharaja.blogger.com

You've obviously looked at a lot of blog sites when you were setting up yours. Let me know of your take on blogger.com and it's basic features/functionality and just your opinion in general.

go for wordpress.com instead of blogger.com

Short version: Blog at Wordpress.com and NOT Blogger.

Long version: I personally prefer Wordpress.com over Blogger. The primary reason I dislike Blogger is because it does not have categories, something I consider a very basic feature.

Apart from that Blogger is more clunky, has more issues and your posts are more difficult to migrate if you move to a different blog. One major advantage of Blogger over Wordpress.com is that it allows you to customize your templates. Wordpress.com does not allow you to customize your blog template, you have to choose one from the many that they support. However they do have an excellent collection of templates so this should not be a major issue. Wordpress.com has very good features, basic as well as others such as spam defenses.

Btw your blog’s URI is corny but I like it very much :-)

Parallel blogs for some time

You can also create blogs at both the location and for a short period of time, say a month, or for a certain number of posts, say 10, you can post at both the locations.

That will give you a real feel of the pros and cons of the 2 platforms and eventually you can continue blogging at the platform that you are more comfortable with.

Enjoy!

I like it !

Ok. I'm looking at wordpress.com and you are so right! I definitely like the feel better than blogger. Categories, yea never thought of them. I guess they are good feature to have. I'm not quite up for the idea of blogging at both places, mainly coz I don't find time for 1 site, forget 2. To me it seems like desimaharaja.wordpress.com is then :-)

Thanks for your input. And yes the name is corny, but what else can King Shantanu be called if not Desi Maharaja :-)

Take care.
How are things in Delhi?

Great! Even I like Wordpress.com more than Blogger or Yahoo! 360.

Things in Delhi are going on fine. Am still looking for accomodation... never thought it would be this difficult. But its OK. I have a couple of friends who are helping me out so it shouldn't be too long before I find something.

Looking forward to reading and commenting on your new blog.
