Still in limbo

Submitted by varun on Tue, 31/01/2006 - 9:54pm.

Still no confirmation of the news. I am a bit disappointed because I expected things to happen more quickly. But there is nothing much I can do about it so am just keeping my fingers crossed.

Its been an uneventful week largely. I read Khuswant Singh's I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale over the weekend. A very enjoyable book. The perfect book for a lazy weekend when you don't want to exert your brain much and just want to go with the flow. I like KS's style of writing: simple English, literal translation of Indian/Hindi phrases ("they will remember their maternal grandmothers"), a reasonably fast pace of narration and a visually rich and descriptive elaboration of everything. I liked it more than the only other novel of his that I have read, A Train to Pakistan. I am looking forward to reading his third novel, simply titled, Delhi.

To stave off the boredom I borrowed India Unbound by Gurcharan Das from my neighbour. And have thoroughly enjoyed the 2 chapters I have read till now. Am looking forward to reading the entire book.

Saurabh (Delhi-wala not Ahmedabad-wala). Is that you? I think it is.

The demand for a 'party' strongly indicates that its either you or Abhishek, and Abhishek does not know about this yet.

Don't know

Submitted by varun on Mon, 06/02/2006 - 2:18pm.

No idea. I know the company from whose network you are hopping onto the Net and I know (less reliably) your physical location but I am unable to recollect who you are.

Maybe you _are_ stranger to me and are just pulling my leg by claiming to know me :-)

OK. If you really know me and want me to guess who you are give me some hints...

Guess ??

Ok
If you know "the company from whose network " I am hopping onto the Net, share it with all of us.

let us see how good you are at your "security stuffs"

You sure?

You sure?

I have your IP address and a simple WHOIS query reveals the organisation to which the IP address is assigned. I don't want you to get into trouble for surfing during office hours :-)

You IP can also be easily geolocated to the city and state you are in.

Finding out these things are trivial and in no way an indication of how good I am at my "security stuffs" :-)

YEs !!!

Varun,
how can u be so sure he is not just behind a anonymous proxy in colorado, for that matter he could be sitting in your office and you coudld be logging his IP in Colarado.

cannot be sure

Submitted by varun on Wed, 08/02/2006 - 11:50am.

You are absolutely right. I can never be sure... the Internet is a very funny place as far as identities go. I have mentioned that geolocation is not 100% reliable in one of my previous comments.

However I am quite sure that he is using a Sun Microsystems network to hop onto the Net. It is very difficult to pretend that you are using a Sun IP if you are actually not. Looking at the guy's (or gal's) browsing patterns IP spoofing can be reliably ruled out.

In fact if you assume that s/he made the comments during normal office hours (i.e. daytime shift) then it is quite probable that s/he is actually in India (or at least near India) and just going through a Sun proxy... maybe a person whose client is Sun and therefore has access to the Sun network.

Dear a@c.com, was I correct?

Dear Anonymous supposedly from Westminster, Colorado,

Was I correct? I see that you have been reading my blog again :-)

What?

Submitted by varun on Sat, 18/02/2006 - 6:12pm.

Am unable to comprehend you at all :-(

And its quite possible that the info I posted about you is incorrect, though personally I believe that the probability is remote.

In any case thats the best I can do in a few minutes with the info I have (your IP address and your surfing pattern for this blog)...

Sun employee??

Submitted by JhQ (not verified) on Sun, 19/02/2006 - 5:55am.

I bet he/she is a Sun employee sitting somewhere in the USofA, hitting the Sun proxy in Colorado. This if the most probabale explanation. If you wanna have another shot, here what you can do.

Since he/she is behind a proxy, getting his/her detailed info is very improbabable.

-> run a port scan on the ip, make sure it is a proxy

-> If the port scan determines that the ip is acually his/her PC and not a proxy, run a detailed nessus scan or retina scan (if you prefer Winz).

-> This may help you find out important details like the hostname, the platform, stron chance of it being a SPARC, which mans it could be the guy we were talking to trying to get stuble upon going on Solaris

-> Whois the block and send an email to the abuse address reporting abuse from this ip, this will make sun dig into their logs and look this guy/gal up.

Few other things you can do, if you are too busy, just email me the IP....

PS: a lot of the stuff above is bad grammer and spelling and mumbling, sorry just woke up...

I know who it is

Submitted by varun on Mon, 20/02/2006 - 2:42pm.

I know who it is. This guy is a friend of mine who using the Sun proxy... he himself is in India.

I already have the hostname, OS (Solaris) and some other info such as resolution, browser etc. Basically all the info a script can gather silently and non-intrusively (Check out Project IP).

Knew it!!

Submitted by JhQ (not verified) on Mon, 20/02/2006 - 3:10pm.

Knew it it would be him, isn't this the same guy we were talking to about installing Stumbleupon on Solaris.....
